8th Annual C3 Conference

College Park, MD - The University of Maryland Libraries and the Office of Information Technology will host the 8th Annual C3: Cyberethics, Cybersafety and Cybersecurity Conference October 1-2, 2009. Developed to help educators and parents learn effective ways to ethically, safely, securely and effectively use technology and digital media, the C3 Conference is one of the first conferences addressing cyberawareness, and one of the only internet safety, ethics and security events developed specifically for educators.

Participants will hear from a number of national educational technology and information technology experts on topics including current and pending legislation, promotion strategies for academic integrity and character education, ethical development and decision making, privacy, copyright, cyberbullying, identity theft, sexting and much more. Representatives from over ten of the nation’s leading educational internet safety and character education curriculum providers will be on hand to share their materials and lead particpants through hands-on activities.

“While technology has had a very positive effect on the educational community, it also has raised new issues that must be addressed. Academic dishonesty and copyright infringement are just two of the areas having an effect on K-12, colleges and universities. The C3 conference fits the University of Maryland Libraries’ mission to provide education in the use of scholarly information resources,” said Patricia Steele, Dean of the University Libraries.

The first day of the conference will host keynote speaker Frank Gallagher, from Cable in the Classroom, sharing more on the C3 Matrix and the National PointSmartClickSafe! initiative. Two stellar panels will share current state and local internet safety efforts, laws, and frameworks for hot issues such as sexting , file sharing and copyright. There will be specific discussion of proposed legislation such as the AWARE Act, the SAFE Internet Act, and the Megan Meir Cyberbullying Prevention Act. New cutting edge interactive games to promote responsible behavior will be shown, along with free online resources that promote Cybersecurity. A full day of hands-on ethics, safety and security workshops is scheduled for Friday. The event will be held at the Stamp Union at the University of Maryland College Park campus (Friday’s Workshops will be in the McKeldin Library). Registration is $75, however, some registration stipends are still available. Registration includes refreshments, keynote luncheon, conference materials, handouts, workshop sessions, and conference refreshments and give-aways.
