Dr. Mark Sagoff to Speak at the Libraries for Earth Day

College Park, MD – The UM Libraries are pleased to announce the “Speaking of Books…Conversations with Campus Authors” for Earth Day on April 22, 2009. Dr. Mark Sagoff, Senior Research Scholar with the University of Maryland School of Public Policy and Director of the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy, will discuss his most recent book, The Economy of the Earth: Philosophy, Law, and the Environment.

In this seminal work on the foundations of environmentalism, Dr. Sagoff analyzes social policy in relation to the environment, pollution, the workplace, and public safety and health. He argues that "the most important reasons for protecting nature are moral and aesthetic, not economic and instrumental."

Dr. Sagoff will answer questions and sign books following his talk. Books will be available for purchase during the book signing session. The event will begin at 4:30 pm and held at McKeldin Library's Special Events Room. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

The University of Maryland (UM) is the only nationally-ranked public university in the Baltimore/Washington area. With a total student enrollment approaching 40,000, the University is supported in its academic endeavors by the University of Maryland Libraries, comprised of eight libraries and more than three and one half million volumes.
