January 28, 2003 Saponaro Heads Up Staff Learning
Margaret Zarnosky Saponaro has joined the University of Maryland, College Park, Libraries as Manager, Staff Learning and Development. In her previous position, Saponaro was the Associate Director, Learning Resources, for the Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria Campus for the past six years. The Staff Learning and Development Office at UM provides educational programs and resources for the more than 300 staff in the Libraries, under the umbrella of the Learning Curriculum. The Learning Curriculum is a comprehensive education program that supports individual and organizational development. A native of Los Angeles, Saponaro received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Communications from California State University, Northridge, in 1990, and a Master’s in Library Science from UCLA two years later. Her first library position was as a reference librarian at Woodbury University in Burbank, CA in 1992. From 1993-early 1996, Saponaro worked at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA, as a User Education Librarian, Library Instruction Coordinator, and as the Librarian for the College of Human Resources. She then moved to VPI’s Falls Church, VA campus where she was Acting Library Director of the Graduate Center Library in 1996 before assuming a position at Northern Virginia Community College in 1997. A member of the American Library Association and its Library Instruction Round Table Nominations, Organization and Bylaws Committee, Saponaro is also an adjunct lecturer at the University of Virginia School of Continuing and Professional Studies. She has authored and co-authored a number of items for various professional journals, as well as co-authoring a collection development textbook. ###
