PRESS RELEASE

February 17, 2004

Lecture to be given by Dr Carla Hayden, President of the American Library Association, Tuesday, March 9, 2004.

In celebration and commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education court case and decision, the University of Maryland Libraries will feature a lecture by Dr. Carla Hayden, President of the American Library Association (ALA), and Director of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, in Baltimore.  For many years, Dr. Hayden has been a strong advocate for libraries of all kinds, and her administration’s main initiative has been “Equity of Access.”  Equity of Access is defined as "when all people have access to library materials, no matter their age, ethnicity, physical ability, income, language, geographic location or type of library."

The theme for Dr. Hayden’s lecture will be: Brown vs. Board of Education: Paving the Way for Equity of Access.  This event will be held in the Special Events Room of McKeldin Library, on the University of Maryland campus at College Park, March 9, 2004, from 2:00–3:30 pm. Please call (301) 405-9048 for directions.

There will also be an unveiling of an exhibit entitled “Groundbreakers: Succeeding Against the Odds.”  This exhibit will highlight individuals who have played critical roles in the University’s history as it relates to diversity, access to public education and civil rights.  The exhibit is designed to communicate this important part of the histories of the University and the state of Maryland, as well as be used by any unit, department or organization of the campus community to provide learning opportunities on the subject of Brown vs. Board of Education.

Equity of Access is a core value of the library profession and the ALA.  The ALA has a long tradition of providing practical, real-life assistance to the millions of its members and users, developing best practices, and ideals for quality service.  The ALA is launching a five-year @your library campaign to call attention to the value of libraries and librarians in our communities, educational institutions, businesses, and society at large.

Come and enter into dialogue with Dr. Hayden, an experienced and knowledgeable speaker on the topic of Equity of Access.  Without question, such a lecture has significance for all of us in the 21st century.
