PRESS RELEASE

Join the Celebration at
McKeldin: A Site to See

Join in from August 26-September 6 to celebrate the completion of a major renovation project and enhancement of a number of services at McKeldin Library, the main library on campus.

A whole series of events is planned, and all of them are free and open to the campus community as well as to Friends of the Libraries and the general public.

The first week of the celebration, when graduate students and new faculty will be returning to the campus, will feature an open house, self-directed tours of the newly renovated areas, and introductions to the many new services that are available.

Beginning Tuesday, September 3, when classes are back in session, the celebration will heat up to include campus  celebrity appearances, a visit from Testudo, tours, and other activities.

Some of the new or enhanced McKeldin Library facilities and services that will be in the spotlight during the two-week celebration include the following: the access services desk, information desk, Government Documents and Maps service desk and collections, McKeldin Copy Shop,  group study rooms for collaborative work, user-friendly layout for book stacks, inside renovations and outdoor landscaping, a welcome desk, additional faculty/graduate study carrels, virtual services such as “chat with a librarian,” and “Question Point,” and free fax service and e-document delivery for faculty,

A complete listing of the McKeldin celebration events will appear on the Libraries’ web site at: www.lib.umd.edu. Here is a sampling:

 • Meet and greet Testudo, our beloved mascot.
 • Say hello to University celebrities working the Welcome Desk.
 • Receive some handy trinkets such as bookmarks, pencils, and other giveaways.
• Visit with the Libraries’ subject teams as they show off some new and exciting services such as the Early Modern   Women Database.
• View the Preservation Department’s exhibit that focuses on the food and drink policy in the Libraries.
• Attend the grand reopening of Government Documents/Maps’ new quarters on the fourth floor, replete with dignitaries as well as lots of giveaways, door prizes, and refreshments.
• See the new group study rooms and additional study carrels, many of which offer Internet connections for laptop computers.
• Take a self-directed tour of McKeldin and see for yourself how the library is improved
• Get the lowdown on what’s coming to McKeldin in the near future—a café, a WAM computer lab—and learn about the code of conduct that spells out clearly each person’s rights and responsibilities in all the libraries on campus.
Plans to make McKeldin Library more inviting and easier to use began shortly after the transfer of collections and personnel from Hornbake Library in 1999, prior to Hornbake’s renovation as a special collections facility. McKeldin has eight floors and close to two million volumes, plus over two million microform items.

Plan to come to the campus during the celebration to find out why McKeldin Library is truly “a site to see.”
