Queen's Game Display Open in Hornbake Library
College Park, MD -A new display in Hornbake Library, "Royal Remembrances: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Queen's Game" commemorates the Queen of England’s 1957 visit to the University of Maryland to view a football game against the University of North Carolina.
The display includes a collection of memorabilia and photographs to commemorate the Queen’s visit and the victory the University of Maryland’s football team achieved that day.
Memorabilia in the exhibit includes a game day program and ticket stub, the Canadian flag that flew over the stadium to represent that portion of the British Empire, a neckerchief worn by a Boy Scout who served as an usher in the stadium, and the football helmet worn during the game by Terrapin Ron Shaffer, a sophomore on the 1957 team.
The event is documented with an array of photographs and newspaper clippings, along with Queen Elizabeth visit to a local Giant grocery store.
A 50th anniversary celebration will be held in the lobby of Hornbake Library on Oct. 4.
