PRESS RELEASE

September 25, 2002

Dr. Ben Shneiderman to Discuss New Computing Technologies
in University of Maryland Libraries’ Second Hornbake Showcase Event

Dr. Ben Shneiderman, Professor of Computer Science at the University of
Maryland, College Park, will lecture from his new book, “Leonardo’s Laptop:
Human Needs and the New Computing Technologies,” on Thursday, October 3, at 5
p.m. in the Nonprint Media Lecture Hall on the fourth floor of Hornbake
Library.

In his lecture, Dr. Shneiderman will guide the audience toward
embracing the New Computing Technologies. He will explain that while the old
computing was about what computers could do, the new computing is about what
users can do. Dr. Shneiderman seeks to raise dramatically the expectations
users have from information and communications technologies.

The public is invited to attend the lecture as well as a reception and book
signing that will follow in the first floor lobby. These events, which are
free, honor Dr. Shneiderman’s recent gift of his personal papers to the
University Libraries.

A member of the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies and the Institute for
Systems Research, Dr. Shneiderman is also Founder of the Software Psychology
Society (1976), and founding Director (1983-2000) of the Human-Computer
Interaction Lab (HCIL) at the University of Maryland. He has written over 200
articles, published several books, consulted and lectured for many
organizations and companies, and received recognition for his work, including
an honorary doctorate from the University of Guelph, Canada.

The Shneiderman lecture marks the second event in the Libraries’ Hornbake
Showcase highlighting the valuable special collections that are located in the
library. The first event in the Showcase, held in mid-September, celebrated the opening
of an exhibit documenting the life and accomplishments of Harry Clifton Byrd,
considered by many to be the father and builder of the modern University of
Maryland. The Byrd exhibit remains open to the public in the Hornbake
Exhibition Gallery through the end of the year on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m. and Saturdays from 12 noon to 5 p.m.

If you plan to attend the Shneiderman lecture and reception, please RSVP to
Friends of the Libraries at (301) 314-5674,or  email: kpacker@accmail.umd.edu.
Free parking is available after 4 p.m. in the Regents Drive Garage, areas B or
