UM Libraries Receive Papers of
Former Congresswoman Connie Morella

Former U. S. Congresswoman Constance A. Morella is the latest political figure to donate papers to the Archives and Manuscripts Department at the University of Maryland Libraries, College Park, home to a number of significant collections of papers from Maryland politicians.

A Republican from the Eighth District, Montgomery County, Maryland, who served eight terms in the U. S. House of Representatives, Morella lost her bid for reelection in November 2002. She is now U. S. Ambassador to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris.

Before her election to Congress, Morella served for eight years in the Maryland House of Delegates.  From 1970 to 1985, she was a professor in the English Department of Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland.

Included in the Morella Papers are plaques received by the congresswoman throughout her career, photographs, press releases, correspondence, and subject research files on a local and national scale. In addition, there are files compiled during her work as a member of the House Science Committee, research relating to her role as the co-chair of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues, information on local-interest issues such as Glen Echo Park and environmental concerns, and a host of other topics. Also in the collection are bottles of water with Morella’s picture on them, used during one of her campaigns.

Other political papers housed in the Archives and Manuscripts Department include those of former Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, former governors William Preston Lane, Jr. and Theodore R. McKeldin, U. S. Senators Millard E. Tydings and Joseph Tydings, as well as local politicians such as Ann Hull, Pauline Menes, and Lucille Maurer.   Researchers use these collections to study an individual personality, to understand local history, and to analyze social history based on the important issues of the day.

The papers of Constance A. Morella are available in the Maryland Room in Hornbake Library.
