HEAR COLLEGE PARK WRITERS

College Park, MD - The University of Maryland Libraries is pleased to announce the opening of its 2008-2009 speaker series, “Speaking of Books…Conversations with Campus Authors.”

The series is designed to highlight some of the fascinating research being published in book form by University of Maryland faculty members.

Refreshments will be served and books will be available for purchase and signing by the author. All events are free and open to the public.

All events will begin at 4:30 pm on the designated dates listed below.

October 27, 2008: Stanley Plumly (English) – Posthumous Keats: A Personal Biography

Stanley Plumly reflects on the life of one of England’s finest Romantic Poets, John Keats. Although Keats died at an early age of 25, his poetry still remains heavily influential in our present world. In this biography, Plumly examines the possibility of poetic immortality through a close narrative study of Keats’s short and tragic life.

November 19, 2008: Howard D. Leathers (Agricultural & Resource Economics) – The World Food Problem: Tackling the Causes of Undernutrition in the Third World

Recognizing that millions of people in the less-developed countries continue to go hungry while there is more than enough food in the world to feed them, the authors of The World Food Problem tackle the question of why--and what can be done about it. The book covers topics such as the history of famine, the concept of food security, economics of supply and demand, and various policy-based solutions to world food problems.

February 12, 2009: Robin Sawyer (Public and Community Health) – Sexpertise: Real Answers to Real Questions about Sex

Dr. Robin Sawyer answers his most-asked questions about sex from his enormously popular course on human sexuality. The book provides answers that are scientifically accurate, honest, and useful for curious readers. No topic is left unexplored in Sexpertise, and the knowledge within the text separates popularly believed myths from the actual truth.

April 22, 2009: Mark Sagoff (School of Public Policy) – The Economy of the Earth: Philosophy, Law and the Environment

In this updated edition, Mark Sagoff expands on the debate over the foundations of environmentalism. One of Sagoff’s main concerns is to separate ethical questions from economic ones and determine which kinds of concepts, arguments, and processes are relevant to each.
