Roller Blades, Scooters, Skateboards, and Bicycles

Roller blades, scooters, skateboards or bicycles can be dangerous inside a building and the general policy is that these items cannot be worn or ridden in the library. Bicycles and scooters should be kept outside the library. Skateboards and roller blades should be kept with the patron at all times for security of personal property. The service desks are unable to store these items for patrons due to lack of appropriate space. A patron can check out a key to a locker in McKeldin for storage of roller blades or a skateboard from the Public Services Office, 4th Floor, Room 4119, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am -  4:30 pm.

  1. If a patron wants to bring a bicycle or scooter into the building, explain the policy and ask patron to take the bicycle or scooter back outside. If patron refuses, make note of patron's description. Tell patron that your next step is to contact UMPD. Contact the UMPD at 911 and request that police be dispatched to the library.

  2. If a patron is using the roller blades or the skateboard in the library, ask patron to stop and explain the library's policy and concern about patron's safety. If patron refuses to stop using one of these items, make note of patron's description. Tell the patron that your next step is to contact UMPD. Contact the UMPD at 911 and request that police be dispatched to the library.

  3. Meet UMPD at agreed upon location to direct police to problem situation.

  4. Record incident in Log Book.
