Theft

Several scenarios may occur in the library: 

Scenario 1: A staff member notices or a patron reports that someone is stealing:

  1. Get a description of the person. The description should include as much of the following information as possible: race, sex, hair and eye color, clothing, etc.
  2. Call the UMPD at 911 and ask the dispatcher to send the police to the library. Meet the police at an agreed upon location.
  3. Do not try to restrain person.

Scenario 2: A patron reports that something has been stolen:
  1. Call the UMPD at 911 or have the patron do this and ask the dispatcher to send the police to the library. Meet the police at an agreed upon location.

Scenario 3: A patron is stopped at the exit gate when the sensor goes off:
  1. Ask the patron to step back to the desk, and follow the procedures outlined in TDS System.

    DO NOT PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE BOOK BAG, TOTE BAG, PURSE, ETC.

  2. If patron refuses to stop when alarm sounds, get a description of patron including race, sex, clothing, etc. and call the UMPD at 911 and ask the dispatcher to send the police to the library. Meet the police at an agreed upon location.
  3. Record incident in the Log Book as outlined under TDS System.
  4. For all situations: record incident in the Log Book and when the police arrive to take the report, give the Director of Public Services' name as the contact person. Court appearances are done by the Director.
