User Education Services/Staff Training and Development
User Education Services conducted support and outreach activities in a broad range of instructional and orientation program attended by 12,711 students, up slightly from the previous year's 12,629.
Highlights included reaching 2,185 students with walk-in instruction, teaching 379 subject classes on request, conducting 18 faculty/graduate seminars, and coordinating the teaching of basic library research skills by the English 101 instructors for 2,898 students.
The Libraries' User Education Services also continued to play an important role in a Humanities initiative on campus known as the "Northwestern High School Partnership Program." The partnership involves various components of the university, including the Libraries, interacting with and assisting "at risk" students from Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, MD. The Libraries also continued to support the College Park Scholars, Gemstone, and Civicus programs on campus.
Results from a 1998 needs assessment survey were used to identify, rank and design a myriad of staff training programs, especially in the areas of computer and Web skills. The Staff Training and Development Office also coordinated two series of required workshops for all staff: Meeting Management and Communication Skills, and Sexual Harassment Prevention. Planning was begun for the first annual Health and Wellness Fair, set for August 1999.
A major collaborative effort produced an orientation program for all new staff that was designed in early 1999 and launched in March with a pilot group of new employees. The partners were the Library Personnel and Budget Office, the employing unit or division, and the Staff Training and Development Office.
