Appendix 2: Sample Position Description for Collection Management Librarian

Position description: Reporting to the Team Manager for XX, works within a team environment to serve as liaison to faculty; provide specialized research support, user education, and consultation services; develop and manage print and electronic collections; and identify user needs. Works collaboratively with subject team members to develop collections and services. Serves a minimum of 8 hours per week, including evenings and weekends, providing reference and information services in all subject areas at a busy service desk in a highly automated environment. Works under the guidance of the User Education Manager for the development of specialized instructional programs; the Electronic Services Manager for the selection, organization, and maintenance of electronic resources and Web services; and the Service Plus Manager for the delivery of reference and information services and the development of a general reference collection; and the Collection Management Coordinator, and the Associate Director for Collection Management/Special Collections on all collection-related issues. Additionally, responsible for broader collection management and development activities in the team including resource allocation, approval plan management, selection and delivery of electronic resources, formulation and implementation of collection development policies and procedures, collection evaluation, and collection-related projects including materials storage, preservation, and digitization. Participates in library and campus committees.

Experience/Qualifications: Subject background which may be demonstrated through academic degrees, course work, or substantive library experience. ALA-accredited master's degree in library and information science; XX years of experience in a large academic or research library; excellent oral and written communication skills; experience in reference service, user instruction, and collection development and management; ability to work in a dynamic rapidly changing environment; demonstrated knowledge of collections issues and trends in large academic/research libraries. Preferred: second master's degree in relevant subject area; foreign language ability.

 


Appendix 3: Sample Position Description for Reference/Instruction Librarian

Position description: Reporting to the Team Manager for XX, works within a team environment to serves as liaison to faculty; provide specialized research support, user education, and consultation services; develop and manage print and electronic collections; identify user needs. Works collaboratively with subject team members to develop collections and services. Appendix 4: Sample Position Description for Team Manager

Position description: Reporting to the Associate Director for Collection Management & Special Collections and the Associate Director for Public Services, has managerial responsibility for the Social Sciences and Allied Professions Team, one of three subject teams in the Libraries. The team is responsible for specialized reference services and instruction, faculty and college liaison, and collection development and management in the social sciences and allied professions. The team manager contributes to broader management and planning at the divisional level, shares in reference service and collection development activities, and coordinates and evaluates the work of the team members. Specific duties include coordinating specialized reference services in the social sciences and allied professions; working cooperatively with other team managers and Collection Management/Special Collections to coordinate subject librarians' collection development activities including subject assignments and fund allocations; working with the Service Plus Manager, Electronic Information Services Manager, and User Education Manager to develop, plan, and manage public services, electronic resource development and delivery, and instructional services, respectively; representing the team at meetings, in administrative planning, and in cooperative collection development activities; supervising, evaluating, and administering personnel activities related to team members; orienting and training new team members; promoting an atmosphere of collegiality and professional commitment; communicating and collaborating effectively and regularly with other team managers and pursues ways for the team to interact, complete projects, and achieve goals.

Experience/Qualifications: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information science; xx years of experience in reference service, user education, and collection development activities a large academic or research library; excellent oral and written communication skills; supervisory experience; demonstrated knowledge of collection development and public service issues and trends, especially with the application of new information technologies; subject expertise in a relevant discipline as demonstrated through academic degrees, course work, or extensive library experience. Preferred: second master’s degree.

 


Appendix 5: Sample Position Description for Collection Management Coordinator

Position description: Working within a team environment of three subject-based teams in the humanities, social sciences and hard sciences, provides project management and support for collection development and management activities including collection evaluation and assessment; digitization and preservation projects; approval plan management and assessment; fund allocation and management; and storage. Works closely with selectors in each subject team. Chairs the Collection Management & Resource Allocation Committee. Serves as primary liaison to the Technical Services Division for collection-related projects. Serves 8 hours per week providing reference and information services at a busy service desk in a highly automated environment. Serves in library and university committees. Reports to the Associate Director for Collection Management/Special Collections.

Experience/Qualifications: XX years of collection development/management experience in a large academic or research library; excellent oral and written communication skills; experience in providing reference services; demonstrated knowledge and experience of collection development issues and trends, especially with electronic resources; strong commitment to service; ability to work in a dynamic rapidly changing environment.

 


Appendix 6: Sample Position Description for McKeldin Service Plus Coordinator

Position description: provides coordination of primary public service point in a central library providing services and collections in all subject areas to the university community. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining a high-use reference collection in coordination with other Service Plus staff and Subject Teams; scheduling the Service Plus desk and managing daily operations; hiring, training, and evaluating Service Plus staff; supervising the hiring, training, and evaluation of Service Plus student staff; training and evaluating all library staff who contribute to McKeldin Service Plus; working closely with Subject Teams, the Electronic Information Services Manager, User Education Manager, other Public Services units and Service Plus sites; monitoring equipment and facilities related to Service Plus; carrying forward the Service Plus vision and the library’s service philosophy through development and implementation of service standards in collaboration with other Service Plus sites.

Experience/qualifications: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information science; excellent written and oral communication skills; strong public service commitment; five years’ experience in reference service and user education in a large academic or research library including supervisory experience and reference collection development; knowledge of a wide range of information technologies and their application in enhancing user services; ability to work flexibly and creatively in a rapidly changing environment.
