Summary of activities
The library tent on McKeldin Mall was swarming with children during
Bob the VidTech’s and partner Brianna’s two autograph sessions and was
intermittently busy the rest of the day. The Friends’ raffles in the tent
and elsewhere worked well. In the Performing Arts Library, the piano
demos were well attended, but the online music quizzes and database demos
didn’t draw many. Nonprint Media hosted a successful festival of
local filmmakers as well as runs of old cartoons. The origami-making,
“Take a Terrapin Home” and “Make Your Very Own Book” were very popular.
The latter two ran out of supplies well before day’s end. GovDocs
did lots of things with its USDA theme, from giveaways to cooperating with
Ag Day. The Diversity Committee’s ribbons exhibit in McKeldin’s vestibule
caught the eyes of many passersby.
Ideas for next year
-
Find a balance with giveaways, informational handouts and activities for
the tent.
-
Use the tent better to publicize library activities in other sites.
-
Explore “quiet performances” to host in the Performing Arts Library proper.
-
Repeat what has/will become Libraries’ “signature events” -- e.g.,
piano demos, book-making, terrapin-making, film festival.
-
Have one primary contact person for each library activity.
-
Clarify who gets t-shirts and why. (The t-shirts are symbols of volunteers
and workers at service desks who have the needed information and can answer
questions from the general public about MD Day events and logistics.)
A call for staff to serve on the 2003 MD Day committee will be made this
fall.
