Remote Access to VICTOR

VICTOR, the Online Catalog

VICTOR provides a gateway to search the individual library catalogs and the combined University of Maryland System library catalog.

Availability

VICTOR, the online catalog of the University System of Maryland, is available to users free of charge on and off campus, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Searching VICTOR

You may search the catalog by name and word or browse the collection by title, call number, or series. For detailed instructions on searching VICTOR, ask for the Introducing VICTOR brochure at a UM System library's service desk. For assistance searching VICTOR, call McKeldin Library Information Desk at (301)405-9075.

Requirements for Remote Access

You need a computer with communication software and a modem or Ethernet connection. UM students, staff and faculty may obtain communication software at Academic Information Technology Services, Consulting Services (Room 1400 Computer and Space Sciences Building).

World Wide Web Access

You may access VICTOR through the UM Libraries home page or by entering the URL below. You must configure a telnet application in your browser's preferences.

Dial Access

If you have a modem, you can follow these directions to access VICTOR. UM students, staff and faculty with WAM accounts may use a different telephone number with a faster connection. For information, call Academic Information Technology Services at (301) 405-1500.

1. Set communication parameters to
• 1200, 2400 or 14400 baud;
• 8 data bits;
• no parity;
• 1 stop bit.
2. Dial (301) 403-4333.
3. At the annex prompt, type telnet victor.umd.edu and press Enter.
4. Choose PAC from the available services and press Enter.
5. Choose your terminal type from the list and press Enter to access VICTOR.
6. To leave VICTOR, type //exit and press Enter.

Campus Network

If you are using a computer at UM that is connected to the campus network via an Ethernet connection, you may follow these directions to access VICTOR.

1. Initiate a telnet connection using software such as Ewan, Telnet, Host Presenter, etc.
2. Type telnet victor.umd.edu and press Enter.
3. Choose PAC from the available services and press Enter.
4. Choose your terminal type from the list and press Enter to access VICTOR.
5. To leave VICTOR, type //exit and press Enter.
