Projects and Activities
Green Office Program
The Humanities and Social Sciences Librarians, located on the 4th and 5th floors of McKeldin Library, have made a commitment to the Green Office Program administered by the University of Maryland's Office of Sustainability. To attain bronze-level status, we have identified things we already do, such as recycling, turning off overhead lights, and packing waste-free lunches. Also, many of us use public transportation, bike, or carpool to get to work. We also selected some new activities to improve our office's sustainability plan, like saving paper through double-sided printing, bundling plastic grocery bags for recycling, tracking our commuter carbon footprint to share with colleagues, and unplugging seldom used devices that are "power vampires."
We will update our site as we check more items off the list. Be sure to stop by the University of Maryland's Sustainability website for more recommendations and to learn more about the Green Office program!
Library of Congress Partnership
HSSL members work to maintain our relationship with the Library of Congress, promoting the use of their resources to campus departments, graduate students, and other user groups on campus, which includes organizing Library of Congress orientations for graduate students from the College of Arts and Humanities.
Field Studies for iSchool Students
Currently, two MLS candidates from the iSchool are carrying out field studies with HSSL. Thus far, a resource guide for the tenth anniversary of 9/11 has been created, and several more are planned with topics relating to the First Year Book and Native American Studies. The students are also shadowing Librarians while at the reference desk, observing instruction classes, and taking part in chat reference training to further their experiences. HSSL is looking forward to sponsoring more field studies in the future.
National Banned Books Week, September 24-October 1, 2011
In collaboration with the Libraries' Director of Communications, HSSL members selected and captioned banned books for inclusion in an exhibit commemorating Banned Books Week.
Gemstone Program
In September 2011 Lily Griner became co-coordinator (with Bob Kackley) of the Libraries' support of the Gemstone Program. She will become the sole Gemstone coordinator for the Libraries in December 2011 due to Bob's retirement. Several other HSSL members serve as Team Librarians through Gemstone.
First Year Book Program
HSSL reached out to the Office of Undergraduate Studies and identified several ways the Libraries could participate in the FY Book Program such as a public reading or an event. Those possiblities are currently being explored, and a resource guide is being developed as part of an iSchool student field study. HSSL also participated in the installation of a Henrietta Lacks exhibit at McKeldin.
On-site Reference Hours
Several members of HSSL are providing reference hours on location at their departments, such as Journalism, Public Policy, and Business.
