General Information

Putting Materials on Reserve:
Faculty who wish to place items on reserve may do so by visiting the Library's Reserves Room, or they may submit their requests online by completing the Library Reserves Request Forms.

General Policies for Reserves Room Users:
The Reserves Collection includes books and articles requested by professors as required reading for their students. So that each student has an equal opportunity to use these materials, please observe the following:

  • There will be either a two hour or a twenty-four hour loan period for each item checked out
  • There is a limit of three items per person checked out at one time
  • All reserve materials must be returned to the Reserves Desk

Locating and Borrowing Reserve Materials:

  • After being informed by your instructor that an item is on reserve at McKeldin Library, obtain the information needed to complete the slip by consulting the catalog notebooks located at the Reserves Room service desk. Each notebook arranges readings on reserve alphabetically by the professor's name (Note: Be sure that you know your professor's name!). After sorting the lists by professor, the catalog notebook shows a list of items that on reserve for each of that professor's courses. The items are then .listed in author/title order. If you are unable to locate an item in the printouts, be sure to ask for assistance from the Reserves Room staff.
  • Fill out a checkout slip (available at the Reserves Room service desk), indicating the call number of the item and the borrower info (e.g. name, address, etc.) as specified on the slip. Give the slip to the Reserves Room staff., showing your University ID card and a current registration card. Staff will retrieve the item and then check it out to you. They also will give a due date time slip to you.
  • Note the date and time due, which has been stamped on the slip.

Renewals:
In general, an item on reserve may be renewed as often as the borrower wishes, as long as there are no other requests for it. Reserve items may be renewed only at the Reserves Desk and may not be renewed at other circulation desks.

Fines:
Fines are imposed in an effort to guarantee that all borrowers will have full access to high-demand materials. To further guarantee this access, fine rates are higher than normal circulation fine rates.

The fine rates are as follows:

  • $1.50 for the first hour or fraction of an hour overdue.
  • $0.75 for each additional hour.
This policy applies to both the 2-hour and 1-day loan items.

Please remember that you are responsible for items checked out by you. Handle each item with care and return it promptly. A fine may be imposed for mishandled or damaged materials.
