Borrower Card Information

UM Student ID:

Eligible users include:

  • Graduate students
  • Undergraduate students

Card privileges and services: A UM Student ID may be used to borrow materials in any USMAI library. For undergraduate students, materials may be checked out for up to 56 days. For graduate students, materials may be checked out for the semester. Loans are due in Feb, May or Aug (Exception: Shady Grove circulates materials for 56 days). This card provides off campus access to databases through Research Port, as well as Interlibrary Loan services. UM Graduate Students have additional privileges; see: http://www.lib.umd.edu/PUBSERV/circ_grad.html for details.

Eligible users include:

  • Employee Designees (See Employee Designee Afilliate Information webpage)
  • Faculty and graduate students from CIRLA (Chesapeake Information and Research Library Alliance) institutions

  • Faculty from Maryland post-secondary institutions

Friends of the Libraries Borrowers card

Eligible users include:

Card privileges and limitations: A Friends of the Libraries Borrowers card may be used to borrow only UM materials. Materials may be checked out for up to 56 days. This card provides access to select databases. See: www.lib.umd.edu/giving/borrowers.html. This card also provides Interlibrary Loan services.

UM Affiliate ID

Eligible users include:

Card privileges and limitations: A UM Affiliate ID can be used by persons with different types of affiliations. Privileges and services vary depending on the borrowers affiliation. In general:

  • Regular Affiliate: An Affiliate ID may be used to borrow UM materials only. Materials may be checked out for up to 56 days. Materials located in off-site storage may be requested. It does not provide off-campus access to databases, nor does it provide Interlibrary Loan services.
  • Research Affiliate: A Research Affiliate ID may be used to borrow UM materials only. Materials may be checked out for up to one year. Loans are due in Feb, May or Aug (Exception: Shady Grove circulates materials for 180 days). This card provides off campus access to databases through Research Port, as well as Interlibrary Loan services, which may be used to request materials from other USMAI libraries.

UM Alumni card with Libraries' barcode

Eligible users include:

Card privileges and limitations: A UM Alumni card with a Libraries' barcode may be used to borrow UM materials only. Materials may be checked out for up to 56 days. For an additional annual contribution, members can gain remote access to select databases. See: www.lib.umd.edu/giving/borrowers.html. This card does not provide Interlibrary Loan services.

UM Faculty/Staff ID

Eligible users include:

  • UM faculty and staff
  • Retirees (note that the ID states RETIREE or EMERITUS on it)

Card privileges and limitations: A UM Faculty or Staff ID may be used to borrow materials in any USMAI library for up to a year. Loans are due in Feb, May or Aug (Exception: Shady Grove circulates materials for 180 days). This card provides off campus access to databases through Research Port, as well as Interlibrary Loan services. UM Joint card

Eligible users include:

  • Graduate Assistant borrowing on behalf of a Faculty member

Card privileges and limitations: A UM Joint card may be used to borrow materials in any USMAI library for up to a year. Loans are due in Feb, May or Aug (Exception: Shady Grove circulates materials for 180 days). This card provides off campus access to databases through Research Port, as well as Interlibrary Loan services. University ID from Other USMAI Campuses

Eligible users include:

Card privileges and services: A University ID from Other USMAI Campuses may be used to borrow materials in any USMAI library, however the loan period varies. The card provides off-campus access to databases through Research Port. Note that you will only have access to the databases to which your home institution subscribes. It also provides Interlibrary Loan services when based out of the user's home campus.
