UMD Libraries Equipment Loan Program
Are you a UMD student and need a laptop or tablet? Thanks to the Library Technology Fee, these and other devices are available just for you at McKeldin Library!
EQUIPMENT
The following devices are available for loan at the McKeldin Library Circulation Desk:
- Laptops - 12 Dell Vostro, 11 MacBook Pro, 13 MacBook Air
- Netbooks - 5 Dell Inspiron Mini
- Tablets - 7 iPad 2, 5 iPad (1st gen), 5 ViewSonic gTablet
- E-book readers - 5 Sony Reader Daily Edition
- Cameras - 3 Nikon Coolpix L120 still cameras and 3 Sony Bloggie Duo video cameras
- Noise-reduction headphones - 16 Cyber Acoustics
- Universal* laptop chargers - 5 Ultra X-Pro charger (*fits most brands except Apple/Mac)
- MacBook chargers - 12 MacBook chargers for various, recent models
- HDMI and VGA cables - standard 10ft HDMI to HDMI and VGA to VGA cables (can be used with monitors in group study rooms)
- HDMI and VGA adapters - various adapters including mini-DVI to VGA, mini-DisplayPort to HDMI/DVI and VGA (can be used with our MacBooks), and iPad to HDMI and VGA

POLICIES
- Equipment can be checked out to currently enrolled UMD students only. These devices are brought to you by the UMD Library Technology Fee.
- A Borrowers Agreement must be completed and signed the first time you check out a device and remains in effect for the remainder of the semester.
- A valid UMD student ID is required to check out equipment.
- The loan period for the equipment is 4 hours, except for the e-book readers (7 days) and cameras (3 days). However, if the equipment is due after the circulation desk closes, it must be returned at least 30 minutes before the circulation desk closes.
- Equipment must be directly returned to a library staff member at the circulation desk it was checked out at. Equipment should not be returned in any book drop.
- Equipment is available on a first come, first served basis. They can be renewed one time at the circulation desk if others are not waiting for the equipment.
- The Library reserves the right to refuse service to anyone who abuses equipment or is repeatedly or extremely late in returning equipment.

LATE/REPLACEMENT FEES
Late Fees:
- Laptops, Netbooks, iPads, Tablets: $5/hour with a maximum fine of $100
- Cameras & E-book Readers: $10/day with maximum fine of $100
- Accessories (e.g., Headphones): 50 cents/hour with maximum of $10
Replacement Fees:
- Laptops: $1900
- Netbooks, iPads & Tablets: $600
- Cameras & E-book Readers: $300
- Accessories: minimum $30

BORROWER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prior to checking out equipment, you must:
- Complete a borrower agreement form in which you acknowledge responsibility for the equipment and peripherals checked out under your name.
- Provide a valid UMD Student ID at time of check out.
- You are financially responsible for:
- Full replacement cost of all equipment checked out to you, if lost or stolen during the checkout period.
- Full repair costs charged if the equipment is damaged, including spills from food or drink.
- Damage or replacement charges will be charged directly to your UMD account.
- Never leave the equipment unattended while it is checked out to you!
- All files should be stored on external storage i.e. a flash drive, email, etc. prior to the return of the equipment to the circulation desk. UMD Libraries do not assume any responsibility for files stored on the hard disk or the recovery of files accidentally left on the hard disk after the laptop has been returned. Please do not store files on the equipment. Once the equipment is shut down or loses power, all files are deleted!
- Neither the University of Maryland nor the Libraries are responsible for any computer viruses that may be transferred to, or from, a user's disk or network account.
- Personal software may not be loaded onto the laptop at any time.
- All equipment must be returned to a library staff member at the circulation desk, not to a book drop. If the equipment is due after the circulation desk closes, it must be returned at least 30 minutes before the circulation desk closes.
- Violation of above policies will be grounds for refusal of service in the future, and/or fines.
- All use of the equipment must comply with the University of Maryland's Guidelines for Acceptable use of Computing Resources.
