ID Card & Barcode FAQ

Is your university ID card or barcode not working in the Libraries or online library services? See below for answers to frequently asked questions.

Why doesn’t the barcode on my ID card work in My Account or Research Port?

ID card barcodeThe barcode that the Library has on file for you may be different than the one you are trying to use. If you are a UMCP faculty, staff or student, please use the Barcode Lookup to verify which barcode is listed under your university record. If you are not affiliated with the University of Maryland College Park campus, see Find Your Library Barcode for more information.

If the barcode in the Lookup is different from the one on your card, you should contact a circulation staff member to resolve the discrepancy. You may be using an old ID card where the barcode on the ID is no longer valid. In this case, you may be able to use the barcode listed in the Lookup to temporarily access My Account and Research Port.

If the barcodes are the same and you still cannot access library services, you may have a new card where your new barcode has not yet been put into the library circulation system. In this case, you must contact a circulation staff member.

Why doesn’t my ID card work at the Self-Checkout machines?

There may be a problem with the barcode. It could be either the number or the actual machine-readable barcode on the card (the ink on the cards can sometimes wear or rub off). Please see a circulation staff member to determine the cause.

Why doesn’t it work in the copy machines or printers?

Please contact the Copy Shop at McKeldin Library if you are experiencing problems with your ID card or photocopy card when printing or photocopying.

If you did not find the answer to your question, please contact a Circulation staff member or email Access Services.
