Directory ID, UMD ID Card, & Barcode FAQ

Is your Directory ID, UMD ID card, or barcode not working in the Libraries or online library services? See below for answers to frequently asked questions.

Why doesn’t my Directory ID work in My Account, Research Port, or ILL?

If you are a current UMD student, faculty, staff, Research Affiliate, or Retired Faculty/Staff, your Directory ID and password (the same that you use for logging into other UMD services) is required to log into My Account and ILL, as well as Research Port off-campus.

If you are having issues logging in with your Directory ID, please contact OIT. If you do not know your Directory ID or have forgotten your password, please see OIT's Directory ID web page for more information.

NOTE: If you are a UMD Research Affiliate or Retired Faculty/Staff and encounter problems with your Directory ID, please contact your department first. They need to verify that you have the "library-db" attribute (as well as the "library" attribute) entered in your PHR record. You must have the "library-db" attribute in your PHR/directory record to get full access to databases and e-journals.

Why doesn’t the barcode on my ID card work in My Account, Research Port, or ILL?

ID card barcodeIf you are a current UMD student, faculty, staff, Research Affiliate, or Retired Faculty/Staff, your Directory ID and password (the same that you use for logging into other UMD services) is required to log into My Account and ILL, as well as Research Port off-campus.

For all others who have borrowing privileges, such as UMD Alumni, Friends of the Library, and other community/special borrowers, you must use your 14-digit barcode to access My Account and ILL (if applicable). When accessing My Account, choose the "Other" link for the campus affiliation before signing in. Please note Research Port is only accessible off-campus to UMD students, faculty, staff, Research Affiliates, and Retired Faculty/Staff.

The barcode that the Library has on file for you may be different than the one you are trying to use. Please contact a Circulation staff member if you are having trouble with your barcode.

Why doesn’t my ID card work at the Self-Checkout machines?

There may be a problem with the barcode. It could be either the number or the actual machine-readable barcode on the card (the ink on the cards can sometimes wear or rub off). Please see a circulation staff member to determine the cause.

Why doesn’t it work in the copy machines or printers?

Please contact the Copy Shop at McKeldin Library if you are experiencing problems with your ID card or photocopy card when printing or photocopying.

If you did not find the answer to your question, please contact a Circulation staff member or email Access Services.
