About bibliographic citation managers

Bibliographic citation managers help researchers keep track of their references for research papers, theses, dissertations, journal articles, publication lists, course reserve lists, or any other writing needs. The software also facilitates the downloading of citations directly from the Web, online databases, and online library catalogs. Using bibliographic citation managers helps researchers create bibliographies or lists of references and easily format them in a wide variety of styles.

Citation issues to be aware of

You are responsible for the accuracy of all citations used in your assignments. Check all of your citations carefully. You may need to edit the citation format.

Pay particular attention to the format for citations retrieved through online databases (such as Academic Search or JSTOR). In many citation styles (such as MLA) you must note the database from which you retrieved a source, as well as the date accessed. That information may not automatically export from the database into the citation manager. You may have to add that information as you import. Use the "Global Edit" function and click on "Electronic Source Related Fields."

Below are some alternatives to RefWorks along with information on how to import data from RefWorks into these alternatives. This is not an exclusive list and the University of Maryland Libraries does not officially endorse these products or their providers.

EndNote/ProCite/Reference Manager

Endnote, Procite, and Reference Manager are types of bibliographic management software (not web-based) that aid researchers in managing references and creating bibliographies. This software is not freely available at UM but must be purchased by the individual.

Zotero

Zotero is a free Firefox extension that collects, manages, and cites research sources and creates bibliographies. It also works with Netscape navigator 9.0 and Flock. Zotero is continuously being improved with new features and is useful for importing non-traditional resources like blogs and wikis as well as linking to web pages and pdf files. Keep in mind that Zotero requires more time to maintain and its library is stored locally on a workstation, not on a remotely accessible server.
