Who can use this service?
This service is intended for University of Maryland students, faculty, and staff.
Individuals from outside the University of Maryland may also submit questions, provided
the questions are related to special or unique collections held by the University of
Maryland Libraries. For all other inquiries we suggest that you visit or call your nearest
academic or public library.
What kinds of questions can I ask through this
service?
This service answers brief, factual questions. This includes questions about:
- basic historical or biographical facts
- citations for journals or books
- selecting or accessing databases and electronic journals
- UM Libraries’ resources and services
- Special Collections of UM Libraries
What if my question is more in-depth?
How can I get help with my research?
You can come to the Information Desk at McKeldin Library or the reference desk at any
campus library, where a librarian can assist you. If you are looking for particularly
hard-to-find information or would like in-depth assistance, you might consider making an
appointment with a subject specialist.
How do I connect to databases from off-campus?
Databases and electronic journals must be able to authenticate you as a member of the
University of Maryland community. To do this, you must either dial into the campus network
or use Research Port, a search interface that allows you to log in with your ID barcode. More
information and detailed instructions on dialing in to the
network and using Research Port are available.
If you experience problems with any databases or see error messages, you can get
assistance at the Information Desk, by calling (301)405-0800, or by sending an e-mail
reference question. Librarians at any campus
library can also help you with selecting and searching databases.
How can I find out if the Libraries own a particular item?
Check our Catalog, the online catalog for the University System of Maryland. For help with searching the catalog, click on the Help
button within the catalog itself or ask at the Information Desk of any campus library.
What if the item I need isn’t owned by the
Libraries?
If another library in the University System of Maryland owns the item, you can request
it through the catalog, using the Request button. The Interlibrary Loan Office can help you obtain materials not owned by USM Libraries.
When are the Libraries open? How do I get there?
The Libraries’ hours and directions are posted on our website.
