The colorful world of Maryland politics found a receptive audience among newspaper readers. Mayors, governors, senators and council members all wanted their faces to appear in the daily press, and the news photographers were happy to oblige.

The picture at right features one of Maryland's most prominent past politicians, Theodore McKeldin, who served as Governor of Maryland and Mayor of Baltimore. Here he is shown in 1954 in his capacity as Governor, presenting a state flag to President Eisenhower.


Maryland Governor Albert Ritchie (left) and President Calvin Coolidge in 1929. For many years, Ritchie had a national following in the Democrartic Party and was considered a likely presidential candidate.

Theodore Mckeldin wins his first term as a Baltimore City mayor in 1943. The popular Republican went on to serve two terms as Maryland's governor.

The Baltimore City Council around 1906. Clearly the issue at hand was no laughing matter.

Mayor William Donald Schaefer and Councilman Allan B. Specter get into the spirit of the Bicentennial of the Constitution in the mid-1980's.

Baltimore's native son Thurgood Marshall (center) celebrates the Brown V. Board of Education decision in front of the Supreme Court. Marshall was the lead attorney in the landmark case to overturn segragation in public education.

Juanita Jackson Mitchell led the Baltimore NAACP chapter and with her husband, Clarence Mitchell, was a key figure in the civil rights movement. Here she discusses strategy with Morgan College students in 1955.The Mitchell Building, on the campus of the University of Maryland, was named in honor of the "101st Senator", Clarence Mitchell.
