Western Maryland

Printing did not remain centered in Annapolis and Baltimore. As the population spread westward, so did the press. In the late 18th century the German American printer, Mattias Bartgis, established a successful printing operation in Frederick, where he issued works in both English and German. Shown here is The Common Prayer Book, or the Pious Country Parishioner (Frederick-Town: Printed by Matthias Bartgis, 1819).

Hagerstown was another center of German-American printing in Western Maryland. Displayed here is The American Farmers' Almanack, for the Year of Our Lord 1822..(Hagerstown: Printed and Sold by John Gruber and Daniel May, 1821). This successful almanac in still published today as the Hagerstown Almanac.
