Printing did not remain centered in Annapolis and Baltimore. As the population spread westward, so did the press. In the late 18th century the German American printer, Mattias Bartgis, established a successful printing operation in Frederick, where he issued works in both English and German. Shown here is The Common Prayer Book, or the Pious Country Parishioner (Frederick-Town: Printed by Matthias Bartgis, 1819).

Hagerstown was another center of German-American printing in Western Maryland. Displayed here is The American Farmers' Almanack,
for the Year of Our Lord 1822..(Hagerstown: Printed and Sold by John Gruber and Daniel May, 1821). This successful almanac in still published today as the Hagerstown Almanac.
