WHAT IS THE THIRD ESTATE?:

NATIONALISM AND THE MILITARY

As a gesture of popular will, the fall of the Bastille was a source of national pride. Patriotic celebrations and national festivals celebrated this symbol of the collapse of the old regime and its replacement by republican institutions. Much of this patriotic spirit was focused on the new national army that would defend the people from tyranny. The army was soon tested as France's neighbors declared war to contain the spread of the revolutionary "contagion." The union of patriotism and the military is best illustrated by the song sung by troops from Marseilles on their way to the war front which became and remains the French national anthem.

This pamphlet describes the national celebration of July 14, 1790 in Marseilles, the first anniversary of the Bastille's fall.
