W. A. Dwiggins CollectionIndex 1940-1949This bibliography/inventory makes use of the numbering system devised by Dwight Agner in The Books of WAD so that numbers appearing next to the items below correspond to those in Agner. The Agner bibliography includes work through 1956. Those numbers which are bracketed are not found in Agner, but use the same system by simply adding a new number to the two digit year.

This brochure is a hand-written letter from Dwiggins to Rudulph Ruzicka, a distinguished American designer and book illustrator, on the subject of type design. Dwiggins wrote to Dorothy Abbe about this book: "Singular book - all about making type, and yet there isn't a bit of type used in making it". Playful series of twenty-one fables satirizing the role of machines in society at that time. Dwiggins caught the foolishness of these tales in humorous illustrations. This is a play about man pitted against machine, which Dwiggins also created four marionettes depicting various characters (although he did not show the play with them). Alfred Knopf published this books to please Dwiggins, for his special efforts make during WWII.
