The Gehenna Press was founded by Leonard Baskin in 1942.

• Burns, Robert. “The Jolly Beggars: A Cantata.” (1963) Amherst: The University of Massachusetts Press. Edited by John C. Weston. Wood-engraved portrait by Gillian Lewis. Limited edition of 600 copies printed from Monotype Bembo; 300 copies printed on Amalfi, a hand-made Italian paper, and the other 300 numbered copies were printed on Warren’s Oldstyle paper. Printed by Gehenna Press in Northampton. UMCP has an unnumbered copy. Rare Folio PR4311 .A1.



• Baskin, Leonard. Caprices & Grotesques (1965) Northampton, Gehenna Press. Seventeen drawings by Leonard Baskin. Limited edition of 500 copies printed from Cancellersca Bastarda on Fabriano and Japanese papers. 10 copies contain additional set of drawings on Japanese Vellum signed by the artist. Hand-sewn into Fabriano wrappers and enclosed in a slipcase.UMCP has unnumbered copy. Special Collection Stacks NC1075 .B32 A43.



• Smith, David R., editor. Conrad’s Manifesto: Preface to a Career. (1966) Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: The Philip H. and A.S.W. Rosenbach Foundation. With a foreword by David R. Smith. A wood engraved portrait of Joseph Conrad by Leonard Baskin. An edition of 1,100 copies printed from Monotype Van Dijck type on Fabriano paper. Contents include: Joseph Conrad “The Manuscripts: The Preface to the N of the “N,” “To My Readers in America,” and “The “Hythe” Preface.” Copies numbered I to C have an additional impression of the portrait printed on Shizuoka Vellum and signed by the artist. • Hatch, Benton LeRoy, editor. A Check List of the Publications of Thomas Bird Mosher of Portland, Maine, MDCCCXCI to MDCCCCXXIII. (1966) Amherst: The University of Massachusetts Press. With a biographical essay by Ray Nash. Limited edition of 500 copies printed from Monotype Van Dijck type on Fabriano paper with 50 copies numbered I to L. Printed by the Gehenna Press in Northhampton. The facsimiles were printed from line engravings on Arches and on Shizuoka Vellum to simulate the papers used by Mosher. The illustrations were reproduced by The Meriden Gravure Company. UMCP has copy numbered 435, which is in a slipcase. Special Collections Folio Z232 .M886 H3.



• Gehenna Press. Culs de Lampe. (1968) Northampton, MA: Gehenna Press. Limited edition of 250 copies printed from Centaur types and printed on Nideggen and Fabriano papers. Bound by Arno Werner in boards with marbled paper and imitation vellum on the spine. Rare Stacks N7740 .C84.



• Peter.(1972) Northampton, MA. A collection of memorial writings and poems by friends of Peter Starbird Boynton. Cover title: Peter et amicorum. Limited edition of 110 copies printed from Monotype Bembo on paper made in western Massachusetts. Harold McGrath was the pressman. Details of printing and authorship on separate half sheet laid in front, one copy printed on white paper and one on red paper. Signed by Leonard Baskin. Special Collections Stacks PS3552 .O95 Z84.



• Gehenna Press. Zapf’s Civilité Disclosed: Adorned with Terse & Pithy Apothegms. (1995) Northampton, MA: Gehenna Press. Limited edition of 175 copies printed from types cast by Harold Berliner. Arthur Larson composed and printed the book. Hand-bound by Claudia Cohen. Copies numbered 1-25 are printed on Arnold Vellum and contain a woodcut portrait of Hermann Zapf, signed and numbered by the artist. Copies numbered 26-175 comprise the regular edition. All copies are signed by Leonard Baskin. Bound in green paste-paper covered boards; grey cloth hinges; red leather label, stamped in gold, on spine. UMCP has copy numbered 54. • Hughes, Ted. Howls & Whispers. (1998) Rockport, Maine. Etchings by Leonard Baskin. Limited edition of 100 copies printed from Centaur types on handmade paper from Italy. Copperplated for etchings by Michael Kuch. Bound by Claudia Cohen of Esthampton, MA. Copies numbered 1-10 comprise the deluxe edition and contain three water-color drawings by Leonard Baskin, a second suite of the etchings (the ones originally printed in black are hand-touched in color by Baskin), one copperplate and a leaf of Ted Hughes’ manuscript. Copies numbered 11-110 constitute the regular edition. UMCP has copy numbered 84, which is signed by author and artist. Issued in an enclosure. Special Collections Stacks Folio PR6058 .U37 H695.
