Golden Cockerel Press


The Golden Cockerel Press was established in 1920. Its first publication was a 1921 first edition of A.E. Coppard's Adam and Eve & Pinch Me.

  • Dickens, Charles. The Cricket on the Hearth: a Fairy Tale of Home. (1933) Waltham Saint Lawrence, England: printed for the members of the Limited Editions Club by the Golden Cockerel Press. Seven posthumous watercolors by Hugh Thomson. Introduction by Walter De La Mare. This edition reprinted from the first edition published by Bradbury and Evans in 1846, consists of 1,500 copies designed by Robert Gibbings. UMCP has copy numbered 979.   • The Book of Eccelesiastes. (1934) London. An English translation from the Old Testament of the Bible. Wood engravings by Blair Hughes-Stanton. An edition of 250 copies with 3 copies printed on vellum bound in white pigskin; 247 copies printed on Batchelor paper. The Hundredth Book printed by the Golden Cockerel Press. By permission of the syndics of Cambridge Uuniversity, the text used is that edited by Dr. F. H. A. Scrivener. Composition by A. H. Gibbs and E.J Ward, and the press run by A. Curan.   • Bligh, William. The Log of the Bounty. (1937) London. Lieutenant William Bligh's log of the proceedings of His Majesty's armed vessel Bounty in a voyage to the South seas, to take the breadfruit from the Society islands to the West Indies. With an introduction and notes by Owen Rutter, comments on Bligh's navigation by Rear-Admiral J.A. Edgell, and four engravings on wood by Lynton Lamb. Limited edition of 300 numbered sets of the two volumes, printed on Van Gelder mould-made paper. Printed by Christopher Anthony Sanford and Owen Rutter. UMCP has volume set numbered 122, which is written in the second volume, no number in the first volume. Rare Folio Du21 .B57.

  • Bligh, William. Bligh's Voyage in the Resource. (1937) London. Voyage from Coupang to Batavia, together with the log of his subsequent passage to England in the Dutch packet Vlydt and his remarks on Morrison's journal. With an introduction and notes by Owen Rutter, and wood-engravings by Peter Baker-Mill. Limited edition of 350 copies printed from Calson's Old Face type on mould-made paper. Limited edition of 280 numbered copies printed from hand-set type with the introduction and appendix set in Perpetua, and printed on Batchelor's hand-made paper. Printed and published by Christopher Sandford and Owen Rutter. Composition of A. H. Gibbs and the press run by H. Barker are numbered 1-30 and signed by the author and artist.   • Gamble, Mary Ann Fryer. John Fryer of the Bounty. (1939) London. With an introduction and commentary by Owen Rutter and wood-engravings by Averil Mackenzie-Grieve. Limited edition of 300 copies printed from Golden Cockerel type on Arnold's mould-made paper, and bound in blue canvas with gold design.
