Guidelines for the Use of
Rare Books and Special Collections

1. Please make sure your hands are clean.

2. There is a pencil only policy in the Maryland Room. Pencils are available at the Maryland Room Reference Desk.

3. Please handle materials carefully. Do not lean on books, force bindings open, or prop books open. When taking notes, do not write directly on top of the rare materials.

4. Do not open uncut pages. Please request assistance from the Maryland Room Reference Desk to open pages.

5. Photocopying is restricted and must be approved by the Curator or Assistant Curator. If you wish to make copies from rare or special collections materials, please notify the Maryland Room desk staff. EXCEPTIONS: Special Collections Reference books may be copied without prior approval. Copies from books in the Katherine Anne Porter Library must be requested using the "Photoduplication Work Order" form available at the Maryland Room Desk.
