10.19.99 We've been encouraging users to download the results of their searching to disks. A couple of things that we need to remember to provide assistance in this activity. First, disks can be purchased at the Photocopy Center. Second, when helping a patron with downloading always make sure that the database CAN actually be downloaded. I usually help the user do the first download and then we check to verify that the downloading actually took place. We now have the Office Suite on Workstations behind the desk. Checking like this takes time, but it beats having a user download alot of research and THEN discover that the database won't download. SPECIAL note: JSTOR doesn't download. Third, with NT on the public workstations, the "A" drive prompt no longer appears as an option. Users must specifically name that drive as part of their file naming activities. For MOST of the databases, downloading is a matter of Insert disk into the A drive Click on the FILE button in the upper left hand corner Click on Save As Name the file using the following conventions: a:.txt The a: is necessary to save to the "A" drive. The .txt extension is necessary to save the file as a text file. Users must specify .txt to insure that the file is saved as text.
