SIRS (McKeldin Service+ Information & Research Services Desk Committee) Minutes of meeting January 5, 2000 Present: Bunn, Hayes, Laguerre, Lindquist, Foudy, Nail-Chiwetalu, Todd, Van-Sant, Winker 1. Telephone at the desk. We agreed that Cindy would see if two more telephones with access to 5-9075 could be placed on the desk. One at each of the remaining two pc's on the front portion of the desk. More philosophical issues relating to service via telephone will be discussed at a future TIP meeting. SIRS assignment before the next meeting is to call LINDA (405-0800). 2. Telephone survey. We decided to rerun our telephone survey the week of February 28-March 3. Service Plus Core staff will cover the hours 8-11, 5-11. The suggestion was made and accepted that Cindy will allocate the 11 AM-5 PM telephone shifts to the teams by the usual formula; teams will schedule librarians to cover those hours. We discussed and made a few changes to the survey form to increase its clarity. Cindy agreed to work on guidelines for those who will complete the survey. 3. Staffing levels at the desk. We discussed staffing levels at the desk. Some of the librarians feel that occasionally there are too many students working at the desk. Ross will send out a reminder to all desk staff that students should sweep, troubleshoot, or go to the workroom for collection maintenance activities if user inquiry at the desk does not justify student staffing levels. Students in the workroom can be recalled by calling Ross's number (5-9262). Cindy will investigate the possibility of adding a telephone to the workroom for general pick-up.
