SIRS MEETING OCTOBER 3, 2001 present: Burright, Garber (notetaker), Laguerre, Lindqvist (facilitator), Moreton (timekeeper), Newsome (guest), Norris-Gonzalez, Stanek, Stefany, Todd, Whitt, Winker 1). Dan Newsome (adaptive technology) told us that: ** the terminal/table for mobility impaired users has been moved to an area near printer 2. There will be signage about priority users and perhaps new furniture that will allow more ease of movement. ** he has set up two study carrels (MCK 4207 and 6207) for the use of people with learning disabilities who need a non-disruptive environment. The keys for these rooms are kept at the SIRS desk--check ID against the list of registered users and put patron's name onto the sign-up sheet. 2). We talked about hardware problems. We suggest that rovers do not report problems directly to ITD but rather to the staff at the desk who may be able to fix the problem. If not then report the problem to ITD and note it in the log book. We need to get some idea of what Chris Bunn's role is in the world of hardware problems and perhaps he can revise the troubleshooting guide at the SIRS desk. For software and network problems contact the MdUSA help desk. We also talked about problems with responsiveness on the part of ITD. We need to keep records of such problems. 3). We talked about the traffic jams for people trying to find available terminals in the SIRS area. This problem has been exacerbated by the demise of the email terminal area. Some SIRS staff do well at asking users to limit their email activities but we also know email is often used for course work. We have no definite answers to this problem yet. We would like to remind SIRS desk staffers to flip the signs down on vacant terminals behind the desk and remember these terminals are for temporary use. 4). Cindy gave us updated news about the changes on the first floor--for access services, the new SIRS desk, new carpeting, and the kiosk. 5). Agenda for the next meeting--10/17/01 * Chris and Ross talking about hardware problems and procedures. * Professionalism at the desk. * Visit by Sue Baughman--best practices ---------------------- Robert Garber 4109 McKeldin Library University of Maryland College Park, MD 20742 301-405-9281 rg100@umail.umd.edu
