Sirs Meeting October 9, 2002 Present: Bob Garber, Ross Laguerre, Alan Mattlae, Yahaira Norris-Gonzalez, Beth Roberts, Debbi Stefany, Cindy Todd, Mary Winker, Evelyn Yocco, Michael Zeliff Absent: Otis Chadley Agenda Items: 1.Round Robin, 2. Wam Lab, 3. Eat in Study Lounge, 4. Welcome Desk, 5. Lost and Found. 1. Round Robin: Mark Wilkerson has investigated the possibility of replacing the change machine with a bill changer, the machine that will give bills instead of change. LEC has postponed any consideration of this purchase until at least November. We discussed the placement of the study guides. Mary will have them installed on one of the columns in front of the Reference Desk and Mary will have a sign made. 2. Wam Lab: OIT is making signs for the Wam Lab. We have installed some temporary signs that tell users the hours and the OIT Helpdesk phone number (405-1500). It is OITs responsibility to manage that lab. If users encounter any difficulty with the equipment, including paper or toner for the printer, refer users to the OIT Helpdesk. At this time it appears that the WAM Lab will not be staffed by a fulltime person. There is a campus phone in the WAM lab for users to call OIT with complaints. The WAM Lab seems to have a different version of Word than the print only station in the Reference area. Users have been unable to print papers created on some of the WAM equipment on out print only workstation. 3. Eat-in Study Lounge: We discussed the confusion that many people have over whether the eat-in study lounge is group or quite study. We decided to make signs asking people to keep the noise level down and change the name of the room to eat-in lounge. There is now a water vending machine in the eat-in lounge. 4. Welcome Desk: The Welcome Desk is not covered on weekends, some evenings and occasionally during the day. Our students are no longer covering the empty hours. People working at the Reference Desk need to pay attention to the alarms when there is no one at the Welcome Desk. 5. Lost and Found: Debbi gave an update on the Lost and Found. SIRS discussed previously distributed draft procedures on Lost and Found that were rewritten for the Safety and Security Manual. We made a few minor changes. Cindy reminded staff that "unclaimed" floppy disks are no longer being given away at the Reference Desk. We stopped this practice some months ago in order to reduce the possibility of disk carried viruses infecting our equipment. Disks can be bought at the Photocopy Center when it is open. 6. Agenda for the next meeting: McKeldin Circulation special permission loans Facilitator - Yahaira Note taker- Alan Timekeeper- Otis 7. Round Robin II Cindy called Diane Fishman of UMUC Library to follow-up on the question of UMUC student use of the UAM labs. UMUC students have their own computer lab at the Adelphi Building. Wam Labs are not accessible to them. Therefore, we should refer UMUC students who need productivity software to the UMUC labs. If there are further questions, refer the UMUC students to the UMUC librarians. Diane Will talk with her staff to see if handouts on this subject are needed or if this information should be included on their current handout.
