Meeting Minutes SIRS November 12, 2003 Present: Otis Chadley, Bob Garber, Ross Laguerre, Alan Mattlage, Yahaira Norris-Gonzalez, Beth Roberts, Deb Stefany, Cindy Todd, Michael Zeliff Absent: Evelyn Yocco Round Robin Items Michael noted that the security alarm seems to go off often when a person passes through but then doesn’t go off if they come back through again right away. Cindy will look into why this is happening. Post-meeting update on this: We are currently monitoring the “counters” on those gates and that little project is due for completion after December 1. Lori, Chris Winker, and Cindy have agreed to consolidate service calls, so we will review the issue that Michael raised after December 1. Allan mentioned that he has been working on the problem of CD’s at the information desk. Many CD’s are unaccounted for. No one is sure where they are. Yahaira: Brought up the issue of students (or others) who want to connect things like memory keys or zip drives to our computers. Cindy clarified that for the time being this is not permitted. (May change). Cindy: Librarians should please investigate the A.R.S binders/guides that are located next to the “Controversial issues” material on the first floor. These are the printed guides relating to cd-rom and databases. Some of these are probably obsolete. Many of these items can now be catalogued with a new location code!! That location code is CPMCK REMAN (the Catalog reads UMCP McKeldin Library Reference Manuals for Databases) Desk Schedule Discussion Outcome: We will have single coverage during finals week. Finals week is going to be the 15th of December through the 19th. For the days December 22nd, 23rd and 24th, will be allocated as single coverage for 9-5 for those three days. McKeldin is open regular hours from Monday December 15-Saturday December 20. Commencement is on Sunday December 21. Libraries are open January 2nd 9-5 January term: will be single coverage with a backup required for the 9-10am hour only. Templates will be available soon. Printing problems and possible solutions We discussed some concerns from the subject teams regarding the computers behind the Information Desk, printing issues and concerns about inconsistencies in service. We decided to discuss how to go about producing “Best Practices” for computers behind the desk, printing behind the desk as well as review the procedures in place regarding referrals. Outcome: Review SIRS Procedures already in place and brainstorm ways to begin working on best practices documents. Bring back to another SIRS meeting for further discussion. Express computers We discussed the idea of having computers that would be assigned as "express computers”. These would be only for checking call numbers and would not be connected to the printers. We discussed some potential problems with this idea as well as the potential benefits. Needs further discussion. Ross will see if it is technically possible to limit a computer for Catalog searching only
