SIRS (McKeldin Service+ Information & Research Services Desk Committee) Minutes of meeting May 3, 2000 Present: Bunn, Foudy, Lindquist, Hooker, Esterling, Todd, Van Sant, Winker, Yocco · Weeding Party. We discussed the idea of having a McK Reference Weeding Party to kick off the summer. Cindy will discuss idea with CMRAC and work out details. We discussed the benefits of discussing some (a few) reference materials before transfer out of the reference collection and decided that we would continue to use email for that purpose. Cindy was asked to clarify the use of McK Compact 3. (Followup: I have checked with Karla: McK Compact 3 is being used for "dead serials" whose size does NOT exceed 8 1/2" x 11". Selectors may choose to send material to that location if it fits those criteria -ct) We discussed guidelines for removing print indexes that have been "replaced" by electronic. In general, transfer those years of print indexes to the stacks when the content has been replaced by electronic UNLESS there is significant access or content that the electronic does not provide. · C-Pen update. We discussed the status of the C-Pen trials. The trial has had very little negative impact on service. Cindy reported that she does not know whether C-Pen circulation will continue after the current trial. The group agreed that we should have another demonstration/training session after the semester is over. · Service issues involved in helping patrons find materials in the McKeldin stacks. We discussed the open meeting that occurred May 4. SIRS suggested that the Info Desk complete unsuccessful trips to the stacks to find materials by giving users the Hold/Search Request form at the Info Desk rather than sending the user to Circulation to simply fill out and drop off the form. SIRS suggests that the form is a good candidate to become an online form. We agreed that users are confused by the presence of the ILL titles in VICTOR; they are particularly confused by the "not checked out" message. Could that say 'being held?' · Home telephone numbers for desk staff. We agreed that it would be useful to have home telephone numbers available for all of the desk staff in case there was a need to contact staff. Team reps will send Cindy this information for their teams and Cindy will compile and make it available in a secure ---------------------- Cynthia Todd Coordinator for Information & Research Services McKeldin Library University of Maryland College Park, MD 20742 ct15@umail.umd.edu --------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Minutes May 10, 2000.doc Type: WINWORD File Minutes May 10, 2000.doc (APPLICATION/msword) Encoding: BASE64 Download Status: Not downloaded with message
