SIRS (McKeldin Service+ Information & Research Services Desk Committee) Minutes of meeting August 2, 2000 Present: Bunn, Edwards, Foudy, Lay, Nail-Chiwetalu, Stefany, Todd, Van Sant, Partap Verma (S+ student assistant), M. Vikor, Yocco 1) Signage. We agreed to hang copies of the Photocopy Center's sign illustrating examples of the kinds of ID cards and photocopy cards that the P4P stations will accept. Service Plus will discuss with Mark and see that signs are laminated and hung. 2) Print only workstation for Service Plus area. We discussed the pros/cons/and service implications of setting up a print station that would permit users to Pay-for-Print documents that they have created elsewhere. Issues that we identified and discussed included: 1) Enforcing no document creation, 2) MS-Office only? 3) How much support do WE provide? 4) Who can use it? 5) Set up a new station or use one that we already have in place? After discussion we agreed to the following proposal. While we will continue to encourage users to utilize WAM labs, we will allow any of our users to Pay-for-Print documents that they have created elsewhere. Rather than set up a separate workstation at this time, we will utilize the workstation that is behind the Info Desk and faces the "glass partition." We will place signage to inform users that this station is for print-out-only (although SIRS urges desk staff to use good judgement in applying this standard since users may need to reformat before they can actually print). Our signage will instruct users to call the CSC help desk for technical assistance. We will design a sign-up sheet in case queuing develops. SIRS subject teams members were to discuss this matter in their teams before final decision and implementation. 3) EIC workstations. We agreed to remove 2 of the EIC workstations from the Unit; this gives us two more study carrels. To learn more about the usage of the EIC workstations, we agreed that we'll gather user involvement with EIC workstation data by sampling through the Fall semester. We agreed that we are not gathering information on which databases are used, but on how many workstations are in use at any given time. Our goal is to determine how many EIC/AUTOM workstations are appropriate for the Unit. 4) Roundrobin: C-PEN. SIRS would like for Tony and/or Ted (of Reserves) to give a C-PEN demonstration so that we can reacquaint ourselves with the product. Cindy will try to determine if new documentation is available. Laptops from Reserves. SIRS would like an update on this project. Circulation. SIRS asked Cindy to investigate the possibility of a session with McKeldin Circulation to review their services. ---------------------- Cynthia Todd Coordinator for Information & Research Services McKeldin Library University of Maryland College Park, MD 20742 ct15@umail.umd.edu
