Absences
Students are responsible for meeting their desk schedule and for getting their own substitutes whenever possible. In an emergency, students are to call the Information Desk in order to report to a person and are instructed to call Core Staff office phone 5-9073 and leave a message. On evenings and weekends, students should call the Information Desk and speak to either a staff member or a librarian. If a staff person is unavailable at the desk or in the office, the student should then call a staff member at home starting with Kevin Hammett and work their way down the list until they reach someone.
In cases where a student(s) does not show up for their assigned weekend desk schedule as expected, the librarian on duty should try to call the no-show student to determine their whereabouts. If the librarian is unable to reach the student call (1) Kevin Hammett or (2) Cindy Todd. The appropriate telephone numbers are in the Security Binder (red) at the desk. There is a staff member assigned to the desk on weekday evenings, that staff member should take care of student "no-shows." However, if the staff member does NOT show up on the weekday evening, then the above procedure would be appropriate.
Core staff who need to be absent and are scheduled to open the Information Desk or work weekends should call Kevin Hammett, at home. If Kevin can not be reached, call Debbi Stefany, Ross Laguerre, or Cindy Todd, to arrange for a substitute. During other times Core staff should call Kevin if they will be late or absent. If Kevin can not be reached, leave a message on his answering machine and call another core staff member either at their desk or at the Information Desk. If no other core staff is available call Cindy.
Librarians are responsible for their chosen desk shifts. If you swap out of your shift, it is your responsibility to see that the correct information is on the Info Desk schedule on ORACLE. If you are not coming in to the library due to an emergency and will not be able to do your desk shift please call your team leader or others designated within your team. You should also call the McKeldin front desk 301-405-9075 (we open up at 8 AM), to alert someone at the desk that you will not be coming in. The Team is responsible for ensuring that the desk shift is appropriately covered. If you are unable to do your weekend shift due to an emergency, it is your responsibility to find a replacement. You should also call the McKeldin front desk (on Saturday we open up at 10, on Sunday we open up at noon) to notify that desk who will be subbing for you. Librarians missing desk shifts can expect to be called by colleagues. Home telephone numbers are in the "Staff Telephone #" binder above Kevin's desk.
