Any items found should be turned in to Lost and Found as soon as possible and logged into the Lost and Found Binder with the following information:
Date the property is turned in
Time the property is turned in
Name of the person who accepted the property
Information about the item, i.e., what it is, where it was found, etc.
The staff member who finds an item, or receives a found item from a library user, is responsible for recording the item in the Lost and Found Binder. The Lost and Found Binder is kept at the Information Desk.
Attach a note with the current date to the item.
If the property contains money, such as a wallet, or is deemed to be of considerable value (for example, keys, cell phones, and calculators), log the material into the Lost and Found Binder, hold the material for one hour, then call the UM Police Department (x5-3555) and ask them to take custody of the property. Please make certain to indicate in the Lost and Found log that the material was picked up by the police -- annotate the log entry with the police property report number, your name, the officer's name, and the time of the pick-up. File the gold copy of the police receipt in the front of the Lost and Found binder.
If the found item is a UM identification card, mail the ID to the Registrar's Office in the Mitchell Building after a brief holding period. McKeldin's Lost and Found practice is to hold ID's for one week, then photocopy the front of the card and mail the card to the Registrar's Office. We keep the photocopies in the front of the Lost and Found Binder. This record permits more accurate response to users reporting lost cards. If the ID is non-UMCP, mail the ID to the UM Police Department Logistics Division.
If someone comes to Lost and Found to claim an item, note in the Lost and Found Binder the date and time that the item is picked up. Have the person sign the log to indicate receipt. If the signature is difficult to read, please ask the user to legibly print their name. When releasing ID cards, be sure to compare the photo on the card to the user.
Cell phones can be difficult to identify/claim accurately. If someone reports a lost cell phone, give them access to the Info Desk telephone and ask them to call their cell phone number to see if the "found" phone rings.
All lost and found items are held for thirty days and then disposed of by service desk staff.
