The Soviet Union once appeared as imposing and impregnable as now it seems lumbering and disorganized. So it was a great shock to the world when in 1956 Poland sucessfuly staged a bloodless revolt against Moscow, winning freedoms that were unknown elsewhere in the Communist world. The Warsaw Heresy documents this revolt, telling the stories of the people of Warsaw who took to the streets to await the tanks of the Red Army; of Wldayslaw Gomulka, who emerged from a Stalinist prison to become Poland's leader; and also of the paradoxical but powerful influence of the Catholic Church in the Communist-dominated country. The book gives a full account of this revolt, its aftermath, and the complexities and concerns of Polish life.
"A valuable addition to literature...indispensable for the understanding of Poland's postwar problem and her future."
