Tel Aviv University, Ramat Aviv, Israel

The Diaspora Research Institute at Tel Aviv University is pleased to announce the opening and availability of the S. L. Shneiderman Archives.   These extensive materials, collected by Shneiderman and his wife Eileen (Hala Szymin) during his seventy-year journalistic career encompasses  S. L. Shneiderman’s (1906-1996) essays and journalistic publications in Yiddish and English, with source materials, and translations of his work in Hebrew, Polish, and other languages.

Shneiderman covered the most important events of the 20th century including the Spanish Civil War and Poland before, during and after WW11. He traveled to and published extensively about Jewish communities throughout the world, interviewing the leading political and cultural figures. His roles as United National correspondent from its inception in 1945 and as President of the Yiddish P. E. N. Club gave him unique insights.

Major projects, documented in the archives, include books in Yiddish on the Civil War in Spain (1938, with photos by Eileen Szymin’s famed photographer brother, David Seymour - Chim), the Russian writer Ilya Ehrenburg (1968), and the Polish-American artist The Stormy Life and Work of Artur Szyk (1980).   Major English books include Between Fear and Hope (1947), The Warsaw Heresy (1959), and The River Remembers (1978), the English translation of the well received book: Ven di Weisl Hot Geredt Yiddish

As an editor, Shneiderman is known for the celebrated Warsaw Ghetto: A Diary by Mary Berg (1945, and then published in nine languages), and for assembling the Yiddish collection Tsuzamen (Together, 1974).  He wrote the compelling narration to the full-length documentary film The Last Chapter: The Rise and Fall of the Thousand Year Old Jewish Community in Poland (1965, narrated by Theodore Bikel, Ben-Lar Productions, New York).

A web site (http://www.lib.umd.edu/UMCP/SLSES) about their life and work is maintained by the University of Maryland Libraries, which houses the S. L. and Eileen Shneiderman Yiddish Book Collection.  In 2000, Eileen Shneiderman published a book in Yiddish, What Time is it on the Jewish Clock? collecting S. L. Shneiderman’s key articles and book chapters, supported by her commentaries.

Prof. Aharon Oppenheimer, Director of the Diaspora Research Institute and Archivist Gennady Pasechnik (gena22@ccsg.tau.ac.il) (Phone +972-3-640-9678) invite your inquiries. Dr. Boris Kotlerman was instrumental in preparing an extensively itemized catalog for the archive.
