SECTION II

UM Libraries, College Park Policies for Processing Series

College Park catalogs most monographic series separately, that is, we catalog each title in the series on its own bibliographic record. We catalog numbered series, unnumbered series, analyzed serials and analyzed monographs separately. The only exception is open monographs where the bibliographic record is a collective title record for the monograph set and volume holdings are attached to the set record. An item that is cataloged separately may be classed separately (have different call numbers and cutters) or classed together (have the same call number and cutter).

College Park follows Library of Congress (LC) and Program for Cooperative Cataloging (DPCC) series treatment decisions recorded in the National Authority File (NAF). However, when multiple classification choices for the same series occur in the NAF; or, our local series classification decision pre-dates and differs from the NAF series decision, we follow our local classification decision. Our local classification decision is recorded in the Master File. When double tracing practice decisions (traced and not traced) for the same series occur in the NAF, College Park traces the series without documenting the decision in the Master File. [It must be noted here that Blackwell North America, the authority vendor who authorized our database series entries in the past, traced all series backed by NAF records regardless of what tracing treatment was recorded, but Master File series decisions were mostly unaffected.]
