Original Cataloging

Mission: To provide innovative and effective bibliographic control of the UM Libraries' collections. We will seek to provide the timely availability and cost-effective creation and maintenance of bibliographic and authority records for the UM Libraries and will contribute these records to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging whenever possible. In so doing, we provide consistency to the organization of knowledge through the design and use of the UM Libraries' online catalog and the contributions made to master records in OCLC, an international bibliographic utility. These activities support the education and research missions of the University while also serving the larger scholarly community.

Vision: The Original Cataloging will be a team of dedicated, highly skilled catalogers contributing quality records to local and national catalogs and databases. We will operate in an efficient, collegial environment where policies, procedures and guidelines are clearly documented and communicated to all, both within and outside of the Group. OC will be an active partner within and beyond the Libraries providing cataloging expertise and specialized knowledge to support programs and initiatives that serve our customers.
