Policy for Names on UM Theses & Dissertations
Authors of University of Maryland theses and dissertations are not established in the Library of Congress Authority File.
Author entries (the 100 field), including authors with Chinese names, are
based on the names as entered in the statement of responsibility of the thesis or dissertation.
The following exceptions are made:
- When names conflict with existing Library of Congress Authority File headings or see
references, qualifiers will be added to the UM entries to make their headings unique.
- For previously catalogued materials in the Catalog found to be in conflict with
existing LCAF records, the highest Maryland degrees awarded these authors will be used
to qualify their headings and make them "unique."
- For incoming theses, catalogers will determine qualifiers to be used when needed.
- When authors of UM theses are also authors of published works, author entries are based on
statements of responsibility in their published works rather than in their theses. Authors of
published works are established for the LCAF.
When author headings on Maryland theses in the Catalog are changed, the same changes are made on UMC
input records in OCLC. The reverse is also true.
- Correction of author entries on records for Maryland theses in the Catalog may be made by
problem solving staff members authorized to do so.
- Correction of author entries on UMC input records in OCLC for Maryland theses are made by
staff with enhance authorization.
- Corrections made by staff in the Catalog without enhance authorization are forwarded
to staff with enhance authorization, who will make the same corrections to the records
in OCLC.
