Under standard cataloging principles, a remote resource will have its own cataloging record, separate from its print counterpart. This is commonly referred to as "multiple versions," where each format receives its own cataloging record. The University of Maryland has followed this national standard in the past with one major exception, namely, adding microform holdings of a serial to the record for the print version. In some instances, this exception also applies for remote resources and is accomplished by adding a URL for a remote resource to the cataloging record for the print version. This practice is commonly referred to as CONSER's "one-record approach".
CONSER has provided guidelines as to when the one-record approach appropriate to use in cataloging some types of serial remote resources. UM has used the one-record approach for cataloging many of its remote serials. GPO is using the "one-record" approach extensively in their cataloging records for remote resources, both monograph and serial, as can be seen by the records from the monthly tape load. The disadvantage is that full cataloging information for the remote resource is not recorded on the print record. The advantage to using a separate record is that it carries more access points for the resource, making retrieval of the remote resource easier in Victor. One can search for the remote resource by its ISSN, qualify the search by "computer file", search by access points which are specific only to the remote resource, and see more information about the resource itself, such as access restrictions. Separate records for remote resources are in Victor for individual titles in a collection, such as JSTOR, Project Muse, and the full-text titles in Academic Search Elite.
Most cataloging records for a remote serial in Victor, whether it is a separate record or the print record using the one-record approach, have a summary and an item record attached. The summary for the remote serial will direct the patron to look at the full record to find the URL; it also directs the patron to the UM Libraries' home page for access as well. The item record shows the status "Available online". Call numbers are assigned to each remote resource even though there is no shelf location. Thus reports can be generated from Victor using the call number and WWW location to gather information about the subject strength of the UM collection in remote resources.
