ARCV Archives Reference Collection - This reference collection dates back to the 1970s and is located in the Archives & Mss. Dept./McKeldin unit area. Growth rate is approx. 25/year. Includes books relating to particular collections in the department plus significant titles in the archival profession. cataloging began in 2002, completed 2003
ARCV Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Archives - Description and Significance: The Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) was the dominant controlling body for women’s athletics at the collegiate level during the 1970s--the same era that marked the appearance of Title IX in collegiate sports. It ceased to exist due to a hostile takeover by the NCAA in 1982. This archive provides more documentation that any other collection in the country on the history of the early years of Title IX as well as providing detailed information on championship results, team rosters, etc. for 1970s-era women’s collegiate teams across the country. Date Frame, Size, and Format Characteristics: 1969-1982 Approx. 400 linear shelf feet Includes memoranda, reports, publications, posters, correspondence, printed ephemera, newspaper clippings, photographs, and some videotape in obsolete formats. Inventory Control; Information Disseminated: The AIAW Archives is partially processed and a rudimentary preliminary inventory for the archival collection has been created. No online catalog record for the archive exists. The collection is unprocessed, but an inventory is available. Collection has an abstract in ArchivesUM. This is a heavily used collection. submitted to ARL hidden collections survey 3/14/04
ARCV Miscellaneous collections - This listing represents collections formerly listed as Partially Processed Collections; Photo Collections; Maryland Manuscripts; Authors & Poets Collection; Memorablia; Manuscript Maps; Video Tape Collection; and Oral History Tapes and Transcripts. Representation of information in the online catalog about various holdings within Archives & Manuscripts is presently lacking. While fully processed collections have been cataloged, there are no records for partially processed collections or notable recent acquisitions (e.g., Spiro T. Agnew papers, Arthur Godfrey papers). In addition, one could argue that there are still several significant items or groupings of items within large collections that should be directly represented in the catalog. These materials are in a broad array of formats and are located in all units of the department. It would be difficult to find outside funding to catalog this miscellaneous array of materials; the preservation status of the materials is also difficult to categorize. All of the collections, or individual components of these collections, are under some kind of intellectual control (accession records, preliminary inventories, databases, lists, etc.). Many are well known and already heavily used by the research community. For example, the archives of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, not yet fully processed and not represented at all in the catalog, has nonetheless been the primary resource for three accepted dissertations. Catalog work on these holdings could be easily completed over a period of years if the present quota of 5 records/month for archival and manuscript collections is continued. There is no longer any substantial backlog of work to be done for fully processed collections; work in this sector could be fed into the monthly quota. The Dept's recommendation is to maintain the monthly quota of cataloging for the archival/manuscript collections. UPDATE 12/8/06: The Maryland Manuscripts Collection now has a finding aid in ArchivesUM. Publications are being removed from this collection to be added to the Maryland RARE stacks. LBSC781 will be writing finding aids for 15 "mini" collections within this collection that will then be separated. This collection can be considered unhidden at this point. being worked on
ARCV Overseas Education Fund (OEF) Archives - The Overseas Education Fund (OEF) was established in 1947 by the League of Women Voters to help women organize themselves to solve their problems and overcome barriers to their full participation in the social, political, and economic lives of their societies. As such, this voluminous archive provides a very rich, multi-faceted documentary record of the work of this organization and the status of women in many foreign countries from the end of World War II to the early 1990s. Date Frame, Size, and Format Characteristics: 1947-1991 396 linear shelf feet Correspondence, reports, financial records, publications, photographs, project files, memorabilia, photographs. Inventory Control; Information Disseminated: A very rudimentary preliminary box-level inventory exists. No online catalog record for the archives has been prepared. A brief description of the collection is found on the department’s website. Researchers are beginning to use the archival collection but it is believed that more frequent and effective use of the archive would occur if it was fully processed and was better reported to the national and international research community. Collection has an abstract in ArchivesUM. submitted to ARL hidden collections survey 3/14/04
ARCV University publications, monograph titles - These include task force reports, commemorative publications (groundbreaking of Performing Arts Center, etc.) and special studies. Particular titles are consulted very frequently by the campus community. See text for Upubs serial titles for additional background. Cataloging is attempting to meet a 25 titles/month goal while approx. 250 additional titles are acquired each year. For more information on university publications, see their web page. being worked on
ARCV University publications, serial titles - These are largely titles that are issued by departments, colleges, centers, etc. on the University of Maryland campus. Acquired largely from the 1960s to the present. Approx. 25 new titles are acquired each year and approx. 1-3 titles are cataloged each month (below the 5/month goal). These titles, in the aggregate, represent a key component of the University Archives and serve to document the history of the campus and the campus's research output. The titles are used by all sectors of the campus community and would be consulted more frequently if better known. Included here are seminal publications about university functions, such as a full run of university catalogs, which cannot be located anywhere else in the country. Requests from Interlibrary Loan are frequent. One would expect that the Libraries realizes it has a special obligation to represent publications issued by its own university in the catalog, but at present only a small portion of the Upubs collection appears in the online catalog. Use of the collection is thereby hampered and national awareness of the activities of our university is thereby lessened. An old card catalog located in the Maryland Room provides some access to titles not yet represented in the catalog; newer uncataloged titles are shelved by the issuing body in the Upubs stacks. Special funding sources for cataloging work have not been identified. Some of the titles in this collection are in need of preservation microfilming. Currently received serials should be the highest priority. high priority

MD Baltimore News American Photo Archive - 1.5 million images in 214,000 folders. The Baltimore News American was an active daily newspaper that existed in various forms for over 200 years. The last issue was printed on May 27, 1986. The University of Maryland Libraries has custody of the newspaper's collection of over 1.5 million photographic images, dating roughly from 1906 to 1986. The collection encompasses images of all aspects of the human experience - people, places, and events from Baltimore to the world. The Department has created a computer-based folder level inventory for the processed part of the collection (approximately 350,000 images) which is available to patrons in the Maryland Room. Interested researchers are urged to contact the Department prior to visiting as access to the collection entails a special search. Has one collection level record in the catalog. submitted to ARL hidden collections survey 3/14/04
MD Baltimore News American Library - Acquired with the News American collection in 1986; not growing. Some book titles have been cataloged recently. Cataloging the rest would enhance the holdings of the Marylandia book collection, particularly in documenting the history of Baltimore. No finding aid exists; no outside funds to catalog these books have been identified. A folder level database is being developed by Marylandia/Rare Books staff. Although stored under adverse conditions for several years, no serious preservation problems are known to exist. ?
MD Maps - Coverage is for the state of Maryland and its immediate region for the period of 1590 to the present; the largest group is from the 20th century. 2,500 pieces which are represented in the catalog by a collection level cataloging record. Collection has web page. high priority
MD MD State & County Documents (serial titles) - Acquired in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The growth rate is approx. 50 titles/per year if one includes title changes. Retrospective conversion work has touched this area; approx. 50 titles were worked on in calendar year 1997. These titles are an integral part of the Marylandia State documents collection, which is used heavily by a wide variety of researchers on campus and in the region. The shared cataloging program statewide has collapsed due to funding cuts; it is unlikely that outside funds can be secured to catalog this backlog. At present the titles are filed alphabetically by title and cardex cards have been prepared for the titles. Some of the pieces have been shelved in acid-free envelopes for shelving support. currently acquired materials are cataloged
MD Serial titles - Acquired in the 1970s and 1980s. Growth rate is approx. 20/year. Catalog activity in this area occasionally occurs in response to title change work. These are titles generated by historical societies and other organizations not part of the State government. They are often a useful resource for Marylandia researchers. At present there is no access tool for the titles except for cardex cards. No outside funding sources have been identified. There are no major preservation issues involved. currently acquired materials are cataloged
MD Theses/Dissertations - Though all theses/dissertations are cataloged on OCLC, approximately 3,000 Maryland Rm. copies were never bound and added to catalog holdings during the early 1990s. The growth rate for theses/dissertations is approx. 1500/yr. The copies assigned to Marylandia/Rare Books are the record copies for the University of Maryland. They are used very heavily by students on campus and the rest of the research community. The campus, and by extension the Libraries, have a very important obligation to maintain UM theses/dissertations holdings in the catalog. ?
NTL Media collection - Need detailed description
NTL National Trust Library Postcard Collection - Consists of over 18,500 postcards, a majority of which arrived in the form of a donation from a single individual who amassed this collection during her lifetime. The majority of the images in the library's collection date from before the 1930s. This collection of postcards is arranged by location (State, then subdivided by city) and is available to researchers to utilize. Access to the collection is via staff searches. Postcards provide a window into the past and are an invaluable resource to historic preservationists, historians, and genealogists alike. The National Trust Library's collection of postcards focuses on architectural images and provides an invaluable resource to preservationists who use vintage postcards to observe period architecture and to examine structures that may no longer be standing. The collection has web page. submitted to ARL hidden collections survey 3/14/04

RARE Dealer Catalogs - Acquired in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Currently growing at approx. 100 vols./yr. No cataloging activity at present. Many of the vols. could be cataloged as serials; there is a need to consider cataloging at least some of the volumes individually (as serial analytics or separately) since some of the volumes are considered classic reference sources in several topic areas (history of science, literature, etc.). Researchers interested in various topics or the history of the book would benefit from representation of some of these titles in the online catalog. No outside funds for cataloging have been identified; no particular preservation problems have been noted. ?

RARE Rare book titles - Acquired largely in the 1960s. Approx. 500 MARC records are needed; approx. 30 records are being prepared each month. The collection would support research in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences if fully cataloged. There is no finding aid for this backlog and no identified source of outside funds for cataloging. Many of these titles were flood-damaged in late 1995; the Preservation Department has devoted a great deal of effort, with Marylandia/Rare Books staff, to conserve the titles after they were initially freeze-dried. ?
