What If Disaster Strikes?

The Disaster Plan outlines what you should do if you notice that library collections are in danger from a disaster. Past disasters in the Libraries include a flood from a broken water main, leaks from sprinklers, leaks from clogged air conditioner valves, and a mold outbreak due to an air conditioner malfunction. If you notice a water leak or other disaster, follow the guidelines in the Disaster Plan. The first steps are:

  1. Evacuate immediately if there are any possible dangers to personal safety.
  2. Report the emergency.
    • Call emergency personnel (911).
    • Call Campus Facilities and Services or Work Control.
    • Call the Salvage Squad leader if collections may be affected.
  3. Halt further damage.
  4. Wait until trained personnel arrive before handling damaged materials.

No matter how big or small, please make sure you report all disasters. Disasters should be reported to your supervisor, the Preservation Department, and Facilities in order to make sure the situation is rectified.
