The Preservation Department

Preservation is everyone’s job in the University of Maryland Libraries, and the Preservation Department can assist you in performing that job and maintaining our library’s collections.

The three teams in the Preservation Department are:

Bindery and End Processing:This team prepares books for binding by our commercial binder and labels, stamps, and security strips all materials going to the shelf.

Brittle Materials, Reformatting, and Deacidification:This team deals with books that are too brittle for repair. The team manages the library’s microfilming, preservation photocopying, preservation digitizing, and mass deacidification processes.

Conservation:This team performs an initial evaluation on all materials sent to Preservation and repairs books in the Conservation lab.

For more information on preservation issues, please contact one of the Preservation Department team leaders. Contact information is located on the Preservation home page.
