Identifying Brittle Materials

The two-double fold test for brittleness can be performed to determine if an item is brittle. This test is NOT USED on rare or unique (unpublished, one of a kind) items.

Directions for the fold test:

  • Fold the bottom corner of page ten at a width of no more than 1/2 inch, applying firm but gentle pressure.
  • Repeat the fold until you have performed two double folds (back and forth and back and forth).
  • If the corner comes off at any time during this folding, or comes off with a very gentle tug after the last folding, then the paper is brittle.
