Preservation Committee Meeting Minutes

Horizontal Rule

Jan. 13, 2000

PRESENT: Carignan, Hayes, Scott, Hahn, Carrico, Alvarez, Koutsky, Chawla (Recording)

The committee welcomed Susan Koutsky, the new Assistant Head of Preservation.

Carignan updated the committee on pending personnel searches for the Preservation Department. The deadline to apply for the Collections Conservator has been extended to January 31, 2000, in order to allow recruiting at ALA. The search for the head of the Bindery Unit has just opened. Kevin Hammett, Susan Koutsky, and Loretta Tatum will serve on the search committee.

Charlie Kramer, the campus Pest Manager, will present a talk on "The Wonderful World of Arthropods," January 20th form 10:00 to 11:00 in the Staff Training Room, 4M100E.

The committee approved the draft statement on terms of service for Preservation Committee members. We will decide in December 2000 which members will renew their membership, and which will not. The goal is to retain half of the present membership at that time.

Carignan presented a status report on the FY2000 preservation priorities. There is still money in this year's budget for individual pieces and small sets. For next year's priorities, the committee agreed to retain this year's uncompleted priorities, and revisit our constituents to add new priorities.

Carignan gave a brief report on the efforts to prevent eating and drinking in the Libraries. She requested ideas on further outreach topics or approaches.

Carignan presented a status report on the paperback binding decision tree. Paperback binding decisions are now based on the structural integrity of the piece.
