Preservation Committee Meeting Minutes

Horizontal Rule

Feb. 10, 2000

PRESENT:

Carignan, Koutsky, Chawla, Alvarez, Scott, Carrico, Hahn (recorder), Guest: Kara McClurkin

  1. Announcements:
  2. Preservation Searches:
    Conservator search: nearly ready to arrange interviews Bindery search: committee has made a recommendation to Personnel.
    The Program Manager position, which will soon be vacated by Kevin Hammett who is moving to NTL, has been upgraded to the "Coordinator" level, which is in the associate staff category.

    Susan Koutsky will be attending several training sessions related to preservation microfilming and scanning. She has requested estimates on the LAB scrapbooks prioritized for microfilming and plans to request estimates on the University Archives' schedules of classes soon.

    A talk on Integrated Pest Management as a technique for pest control on campus will be scheduled soon. It will be open to all library staff.

    Preservation is working closely with Special Collections planning for the upcoming move to the Hornbake Library, focusing especially on techniques for moving rare books.

  3. Preservation Outreach:
  4. The committee discussed a variety of possible programs that could be developed to educate staff and users about preservation issues particularly relating to proper book handling (shelving) and photocopying. The committee hopes to engage the new graphics arts staff member in developing materials. The group also wants to explore ways to partner with public services to increase staff awareness of preservation concerns.

  5. Membership:
  6. Anita Carrico announced that she will be resigning from the committee. The Arts and Humanities team will recommend a replacement for Anita to the committee.

  7. Maryland Day:
  8. The Disaster Response Team will demonstrate disaster response techniques as part of the Maryland Day festivities.

  9. Schedule:
  10. The committee scheduled their meetings for the rest of the semester.
